My Favorite Whistle-blower

Sunday night I rarely ever make it out to a show. I have a couple of jobs, and the most notable of those jobs requires that I make a hard 8 a.m. deadline every Monday morning. So being the good steward that I am with my time I traditionally deny myself the pleasure of staying out late on Sunday. However, there is one caveat to that rule, and it's name is Andrew Bird. I saw Andrew Bird live for the first time in 2007 at the Gypsy Ballroom, which turned out to be one of the very last shows at that venue. It was an experience I'll never forget for many reasons. I loved Gypsy, I love Andrew Bird, and at the time it was two days before I was about to get married to the love of my life, my wife Rebekah.

Coming back to the present for a moment - I was excited for my second opportunity to see Mr. Bird play. This time around wasn't much different than the first. I love Granada Theater, I still love Andrew Bird, and I am all set to embark on my next major life change - the birth of my first child. Perhaps it's silly to be highlighting such personal events in a concert review, but Bird's lyrics and unique storytelling ability just bring it out of me. What's music if not personal anyway?

I like being drawn in by the way Bird plays his violin. At first he strums it playfully, as if playing a banjo around a campfire. Without hesitation he easily jumps from playful strings to a moody ballad which enslaves even the chattiest of all teenage girls (who happened to be standing right behind me). His looping melodies swarm the crowd until everyone is entranced.

Songs from all Andrew Birds albums were played, the most coming off his latest full length, Noble Beast. The highlight of the night for me was Anonanimal, the standout track from Beast. However, if you listened and watched the sold out crowd at Granada, you'd be hard pressed to name a fan favorite. All of the songs seemed to please the loyal crowd.

It was apparent that Bird gave it his all in a well rounded and classic performance. Though, at times he did look tired. Perhaps it was from the fatigue that a week at Austin's South by Southwest Music Festival can surely bring. Opening act, Haley Bonar, alluded to the relief of being done with such an overwhelming event during her performance.

I had never heard of Bonar, but I was pleasantly surprised by several of her songs, especially the most memorable, Arms in Harm.

Not many things can get me out on a Sunday night - not when the week seems ready to drown my weekend bliss and quench out all of my renewed energy - but I knew before I even walked inside Granada that I'd made a wise decision. I left Sunday night with a smile on my face, ready to press into the week before me. A good songwriter can change the outcome of anyone's mood, and Andrew Bird did not disappoint. J. Swords

Recently played on Dallas Does Indie Episode #118, the band The Temper Trap has been named one of the BBC's 2009 Breakout Bands. Last year the BBC correctly predicted quick success for The Tings Tings and Adele among others. The Temper Trap have been confirmed to play at South By Southwest this year.

FLEET FOXES ON SNL

NME News- Fleet Foxes are set to perform as the musical guests on this week's 'Saturday Night Live', set to air January 17 on NBC. The Seattle indie rockers will be just the sixth band from an independent label to snag the coveted spot on the legendary US television show in its more-than-30-year history. The band are planning to perform two songs from their 2008 self-titled debut album: 'Blue Ridge Mountains' and 'Mykonos'. Actress Rosario Dawson will host the episode.

Meanwhile, the band are scheduled to play three sold-out shows at London's Roundhouse in February.

BACK TO THE STUDIO: BAND OF HORSES

According to recent interweb rumblings and a story recently posted on Stereogum, Band Of Horses is heading back to the studio (as in Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC) to begin work on their third album. Since the released Cease to Begin in 2007 the band has slowly begun adding newer songs to their set list at concerts. Most notably the song "Older" of which we have a not so great video below.

The Acorn recently came through Dallas on tour with Calexico. I didn't get out to the show and now I'm KICKING, physically KICKING myself. Not because I missed Calexico (though I'm sure they were great), but because I missed these guys. I'll be playing this song on Dallas Does Indie Episode #117 next week, but I just had to give you a taste now. They recently released an EP called Tin Fist and the song below is from their album Glory Hope Mountain, both are excellent.

Meet French Miami::

Loosely speaking, French Miami is a rock band. Using rock music as a starting point, French Miami use its structures as the glue holding together more abstract musical ideas: dizzying, jagged guitar riffs anchored around pulsing synths, harmonized finger-tapping accenting tightly wound grooves, precise stop-start timing. And although part of a lineage of a number of great bands from the Touch and Go/Southern golden era, Jason Heiselmann's melodic, memorable vocals weave the bands more technical ideas into a unique realm which may too gritty for pop, yet too hooky not to be.

Since forming in 2006, French Miami has ascended up the San Francisco totem pole earning themselves a reputation for as a local favorite with their raucous live performances. As a trio, French Miami is busy on stage swapping roles. The lack of a bassist not very noticeable by just listening as their smart guitar interplay and synth work give the band plenty of low end. Singer Jason Heiselmann seamlessly eases between baritone guitar, drums, keyboards, and tackling vocals, while multi-instumentalist Roland Curtis plays double duty as well on guitar and synths. Drummer Chris Crawford stays locked on the drums, his signature BOOM! creating the backbone of their sound. For French Miami, it's not making up for not having enough hands for a bass, it's about pushing the limits of what a three-piece group can play and sound like; without set limits onstage, they're a band that sound more expansive than any "power trio" ever could be.

Hearts of Palm get mastered by Henrik

Hearts of Palm, based out of Los Angeles, have an album coming out called For Life. I doubt that this title has anything to do with spending time in the clink, or their loyalty to the LA Gang scene, but you never know.

H.o.P. just had a full write up done in the LA Times, and were proclaimed a "Buzz Band."

The first single off the album was mastered by Henrik Jonsson (Peter, Bjorn and John, Robyn, Lykki Li), and it just so happens that I have it right here for your downloading pleasure. Check it out, and let me know what you think.

Meet David Martin Moore

So I recently heard David Martin Moore and was stunned, and no that is not an exaggeration. I know that a lot of singer-songwriters come along and they get compared to Elliott Smith or Jeff Buckley, or in the case of Moore, Nick Drake. I don't like making those comparisons, and I'll tell you why. As each verse of Moores song Stray Age slowly unfolds, an underlying message of peace and contentment can be heard, and for me that's a message I need to hear daily.

He may be the latest in an entourage of amiable, melodic, and deep thinking journeymen to hit the indie scene, and will undoubtedly find himself being sized up against the Sam Beams or Bon Ivers, but if you take nothing from this review besides this - know that David Martin Moore sings about universal things that anyone at anytime can relate to, and that's the difference between being compared to someone and someone being compared to you.

So it's taken a little longer than expected, but the good news is that it was worth it. We now have the Stream up and running for the Indie-Verse, which means that anyone, anywhere in the world can tune in 24-7-365. For the most part, you can hear me doing my thing from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dallas Does Indie is starting to air every Monday and Thursday as well.

So What's The Deal With INDIE-VERSE???

About, oh, four months ago, I got a phone call from CBS Radio asking me if I could come in and talk to them about developing an indie rock radio station for the Dallas / Ft. Worth Metroplex. I met with Eric Landrum, who is the Program Director for the new station, and we immediately began throwing ideas out. I am beyond thrilled to tell you that CBS Radio has given us the green light to move forward with producing a full blown 24/7 HD Radio Station. The station can be heard right now by anyone with an HD Radio on 105.3 HD - 2, not to be confused with LIVE 105.3 which is still remaining an FM Station. The hope is that at some point in the near future you will be able to hear the station in FM, but just like most things worth waiting for, the process will be slow and calculated.

The station name is the INDIE-VERSE ( kind of like a Musical Universe for Indie-kids ). In the next few weeks, we will be launching a website where anyone, anywhere, can stream the station 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Now, what does this mean for Dallas Does Indie? Well first let me give you a little background of the show, and what my goal has been from the beginning.

3 years ago, I got so fed up with how bad Dallas radio had become that I taught myself about Podcasting and decided I was going to do something to give people in the Dallas area like me a chance at actually hearing great music from artists that they may otherwise never get to know about. I believe the first month of Dallas Does Indies life, I had a total 15 listeners. These days DDI is heard by nearly 3000 people a week from all over the world. I have grown to love how grass roots the podcast community is, and I don’t want to forfeit the rare sense of accomplishment I have received from seeing each and every one of you download a show produced by just a normal music loving guy who does a show out of a spare bedroom in his house.

That being said, we have the opportunity to do what I had in mind all along, which is change the way Dallas/Ft. Worth thinks about music. So I am asking you to embrace this with me. Starting with this weeks episode, Dallas Does Indie will be heard not only by podcast, but also on the INDIE-VERSE every Monday from 10-11 a.m., and re-air every Thursday from 1-2 p.m. I will be working with Eric Landrum and the team at INDIE-VERSE to make sure that every aspect of the station is quality. I will also be developing and producing other shows that air throughout the week. In addition, several others who share our same passion for good music will be bringing you weekly shows.

This is a dream come to fruition for me, and hopefully for you as well. From here on you will hear me intro the show as Dallas Does Indie on The INDIE-VERSE. I hope that you tune in to 105.3 HD2 and support what we are doing. Feel free to email with any questions you may have. Again, Dallas Does Indie isn’t going anywhere, you will still be able to download the show from iTunes. We will be going back to our weekly format to coincide with the weekly radio show. I realize that what I am telling you now is a lot to take in, and you may be wondering what the heck HD Radio is.

HD Radio is a Digital Radio format that is the early stages of development. It basically uses stations "inbetween" FM broadcast. It sends out a separate and far clearer radio signal to anyone who has an HD Radio in the area. I think how far the signal reaches varies depending on the station, but with CBS being one of the largest providers of radio broadcasting in the country, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My main focus, at least for now, is on the Indie-Verse website. If you were to look at it today, July 1st, it doesn't look like much, but trust me I have a very vivid idea of how I want the site to function. It just takes time.

Anyways, you know as much as I do now, so like I said on the show - lets go through it together. Give me your feedback on what you have always wanted in a Dallas Radio Station and Eric and I will do our best.
